If you are lucky enough to have a library in your home, you’ll doubtless want to show it off to its best. However, deciding what that means for your space and individual taste preferences can seem overwhelming. Why not take some home library design inspiration from the professionals at Artichoke, designers and makers of fine joinery-led interiors, who focus on sensitively updating period houses for modern family living. Artichoke recently was tasked with creating a large library within a Georgian townhouse in Dublin – here’s what they did.

The story behind this exquisite Georgian home library design – What was the brief?

The owners of this Georgian family home asked for a spacious bespoke library that would form the main part of the raised ground floor living space. The brief left a lot open to interpretation – the main requirement was that it should be an understated room in which the books were the standout heroes.

What was the inspiration?

The owners’ request for this bespoke home library design came around the time that the Artichoke team visited St Giles House in Wiltshire, the original home of the 1st Earl of Shaftsbury. The house had fallen into disrepair after WW2 and was on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register until it was rescued by the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury in 2010. The magnificent library remained untouched, but its grandeur and traditional joinery were nevertheless inspiring to Artichoke’s designers, who drew on features of the room when envisioning the home library design for the Dublin townhouse.

The finished library

The library is now an extremely beautiful space to both look at and spend time in. Large windows fill the room with light, while soft red walls that give the room a traditional library aesthetic. The books are showcased in white bespoke joinery bookcases, allowing them to be the stars of the show.

The owner, being an interior designer themselves, introduced different leathers and woods to the colour scheme, creating an eclectic and slightly less formal feel. Artwork dotted throughout the room draws the eye, as do the two glittering chandeliers overhead. Cosy armchairs point towards the grand fireplace, offering the perfect spot to curl up with one of the many books on offer.

This home library design is truly spectacular, and something everyone looking to create or revamp their library can get inspired by.
