Home bakers in Singapore that deliver the most indulgent confections

Sometimes nothing feels more satisfying than a decadent chocolate cake, or pillowy buns from an excellent bakery.

After all, we could all use a little bit of joy in our lives — diets be damned — especially in these turbulent times where we’re seeing tightened restrictions to curb the pandemic. With dining-in no longer permitted, takeaways and deliveries have once again become the norm, and we’re turning to our favourite home bakers for some comfort food.

Serving up crumbly cookies, creamy cakes and plump bomboloni bursting with flavours, these are our picks of the best home bakers in Singapore. And yes, they all deliver to your doorstep.

The Fat Kid Bakery

Founded last year by self-taught baker Ariel Tang, The Fat Kid Bakery is known for its delightfully fluffy sourdough bomboloni — Italian-style stuffed doughnuts. Each confection is dusted with sugar on the outside and generously packed with fillings such as chocolate, earl grey, mango mousse, blueberry cheesecake and apple pie. One of our top picks is the roasted oolong milk tea, which boasts an exquisitely creamy and fragrant heart of tea-infused milk custard. Another easy favourite is the summer berry bomboloni, containing a tart homemade jam of blackberries, cherries, strawberries, redcurrants and blueberries.

Other tantalising creations on the menu include eclairs, chocolate chip cookies, and triple chocolate brownies — which come in gloriously fudgey bite-sized pieces.

If you like being able to view and choose your bakes in person, The Fat Kid Bakery has recently opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Ang Mo Kio, which stocks a limited range of items from Wednesday to Sunday. It also operates as a collection point for online pre-orders. More details here.

Yanagi Cakes

Yanagi Cakes’ Chocolate Orgasm needs to be on every chocolate lover’s must-try list. The decadent confection is essentially a giant lava cake with a molten centre — making for an ultra-Instagrammable moment when you slice into it. The cake itself is light and fluffy, and its dark chocolate core is bittersweet and not cloying.

The bakery also offers glazed milk buns and other treats such as burnt Basque cheesecake, banana butter cake, and black sesame cheesecake.

This home baker serves up a wide repertoire of confections including crunchy peanut butter brownies, buttery orange financiers, chocolate caramel tarts and double chocolate chip cookies. A savoury standout is its cheddar gougère choux puffs, which are filled with gooey, salty cheese and taste divine when eaten warm. Each puff is layered with smoked red cheddar and lightly torched on top for a slightly smokey taste.

Cheri Chocolate occasionally launches seasonal specials — with past drops of chocolate orange hot cross buns and a black truffle version of its cheddar gougère puffs — so keep a lookout on its Instagram page. It also takes orders for custom cakes and bakes.

Chances are, you’ve spotted Upcakes’ durian chocolate cake making its rounds on social media. The sinful concoction is essentially a sponge cake slathered in bittersweet chocolate ganache and packed with velvety Mao Shan Wang durian pulp in the centre. It has received rave reviews from customers, and has been the business’ bestseller since its release last March.

For those who aren’t keen on durian, Upcakes also offers a regular chocolate cake that’s equally delicious and addictive, as well as a chocolate chip mint version.

Launched late last year, Pristhebake by home baker Priscillia Leow offers only two items on the menu — her signature oatmeal chocolate cranberry cookies, and chocolate brownies studded with sea salt and cocoa nibs. If you have space for only one option, make it the cookies. Every piece is deliciously buttery and crumbly, and loaded with Valrhona dark chocolate, tangy cranberries and coconut for a chewy texture.

The cookies are available in 200gram and 300gram resealable packs — making them perfect for gifting.
