Style maven and ID, Li Tim shares how he creates extraordinary moments with Penfolds

Koh Li Tim not only has an eye for interior design and fashion, but for a glass of fine wine as well.

Li Tim may be known as a style maven to you; but to others, he is the man behind the luxurious walls that you may have seen on social media or taken pictures with during your travels. Namely, The Park Hyatt in Ho Chi Minh, Grand Hyatt in Kathmandu, Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel, and many more. When asked which of his extraordinary projects is the one that he’s most proud of? “I’m proud of so many, but our upcoming Anantara Resort in Bali is currently on top!” he answered. Like Jane Chuck, Li Tim knows what’s best and how to create an extraordinary moment, one of them includes sipping on Penfolds wine.

An Australian winery, Penfolds has always set the benchmark of wines when it comes to quality and innovation — so it’s no surprise to see the newest 2020 collection hold the same values. A new blend is introduced in the 2020 collection. The Penfolds g4 is a perfect blend of four vintages of Grange, namely the 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2016. Each of them outstanding on its own, but the Penfolds g4 is a result of perfect quality, structural and style perspective.

Another favourite among the classics is the 2018 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz. ‘Baby Grange’, a nickname that many have given, is the world’s most cellared red wine styles with a reputation that’s known across the globe. The Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has reached its 60th anniversary since introduced in 1960 by Max Schubert. “Put simply, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz manifests all that is Penfolds, a wine that so many of us have grown with. This style extolls the wisdom of blending, as it does the synergies afforded by varietal and sourcing freedom,” said Gago.

A joyous celebration indeed and to celebrate it, we asked Li Tim to share “3” extraordinary facts, “8” extraordinary wine experiences and “9” extraordinary experiences. Read below for the full interview. The Penfolds Collection 2020 and Penfolds g4 are available now. For more information, visit www.penfolds.com.

What’s an extraordinary interior design project that you’re most proud of?

I’m proud of so many, but our upcoming Anantara Resort in Bali is currently on top! It will be pretty sick.

You’re known to be quite the style icon.. What’s an extraordinary fashion moment that you’ve had?

Definitely attending fashion week overseas or even being on the city streets — it’s exhilarating!

Is there an extraordinary event that has changed your life?

I can’t name a specific moment that has changed my life, but I like to appreciate the little wins. Those moments are extraordinary to me.

What is your favourite aspect of the famed Bin 389?

I think the Bin 389 truly lives its reputation. The dark berries and oak flavours together really do make a masterpiece of a wine.

Do you prefer your wine red or white, and why?

Reds, for sure. The complexity and various tasting notes ranging from black fruits to oak always make a compelling reason.

What’s an extraordinary moment that you’d like to savour with Penfolds?

Any moment with my friends and family, really. I see the same few people all the time, and I can’t think of any other way to enjoy a good bottle of wine!

Do you think wine should be saved for a special occasion, or do you think that you MAKE the occasion by opening a bottle of wine?

At any point in time you have nothing to whine about, is a great time to wine for sure. Sorry, I just had to, but you get the message!

Describe your perfect meal to be paired with the Bin 389?

I’m a steak kind of guy, anything with good marbling and a bottle of Bin 389.

Would you have the Bin 389 at 3pm, 8pm or 9pm?

8pm seems fair, it’s dinner time! (laughs).

Tell us about your experience filming the Penfolds video

It was a cool experience, to be honest. The concept of the video really drew me to it. I loved the idea of exploring. Also, it was such a pleasure working with Jane Chuck.

If you could enjoy a bottle of Bin 389 with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I’d pick my mates who are overseas, who are very much alive (laughs). Long overdue without being able to travel!

Out of the places you’ve been across the globe, which one would you travel to again, and why?

Any city really, time to update my wardrobe!

What’s the best and worst part about travelling?

Everything is great, perhaps the lack of sleep, and jet lag if any. I like my days full so that I can explore and ultimately eat more!

What’s your favourite way to unwind?

I listen to loads of music, that would be my main thing for sure.

Best advice that you’ve ever given or received?

I think something that I unconsciously live by is to always unwind and start fresh the next day. I realised that I tackle issues better that way.

How would you describe your personal style?

Relaxed, or so I hope. Because I really enjoy nothing more than being comfortable, hence the perpetual ever-so-slightly oversized fits.

What’s an extraordinary gift that you’ve given or received?

Having been able to truly love and receive love, unselfishly, unconditionally, even if transient, the learning from that is extraordinary.

What do you think is the best kept secret place in KL?

Local food joints, there are a ton of hidden gems. These people need a credible platform to be on so that locals and tourists alike have proper guides to follow!

What would you say your ultimate self-care practice is?

Granting myself the time to feel how I need to feel, assuming it is sad, or time to process. I think that’s really important. Don’t carry that with you!

As Bin 389 reaches its 60th anniversary, where in life do you think you’ll be at when you are 60 years old?

Probably travelling around the world.
