The 5-step guide to celebrating life at home

During these difficult and trying times, it’s the little moments that matter.

If you’re feeling somewhat down during this time, you’re not the only one. Though introverts might be cheering at the prospect of continuing to work from home, they sure need interaction from time to time. For the rest of us who might be stressed out, it’s important to try to find a way to enjoy – and maybe even come to cherish – our micro-moments at home.

What if we told you there’s a way for you to start enjoying your time at home instead of feeling stuck? You might be wondering why you should focus on your inability to go out and enjoy a meal. But we’ve taken some cues from pro organizer Marie Kondo – who is known for showing gratitude to her belongings– and translated it into a 5-step guide to celebrating life at home.

1. Your home is a wonderland

Instead of focusing on what you can’t do outside your home right now, think about the possibilities inside your home. Ask yourself: What do you do every day? The first step is to recognise your daily routine. Whether it’s making your morning coffee or spritzing some room perfume, every activity counts. These are what our friends at FWD insurance call micro-moments — the tiny little things you do every day.

2. Write down those micro-moments

Once you’ve identified your daily activities, write them down in a journal. If your list gets long, categorise your daily activities into different groups. Journaling is a great way to organise your thoughts, and the act of journaling can even be a micro-moment in itself for those who do it daily. Make this step extra special with a beautiful journal from Moleskine or Field Notes.

3. Pick your favourite ones to focus on for the day

With your full list of daily activities, you may start to see which ones particularly stand out to you. Depending on your mood, you can select different micro-moments on different days or create a schedule defining the activities you want to focus on daily or weekly. 

4. Observe your reaction to your daily activity

Here is the fun part that comes after deciding what you’re going to focus on for the day. Quietly observe what you’re doing at the moment and thank yourself for taking time out of the day to work on that daily routine. Does refilling your flower vase fill you with joy, or does brewing tea bring you a sense of calm and tranquility? Remember that feeling and just savour the moment.

5. Express gratitude for your everyday routine

At the end of your daily routine, you may realise that slowing down has made your chosen activity much more enjoyable than it usually is. If you’ve reached this stage, congratulations — you have fully become present with your home life. Show gratitude and thank yourself for taking the time to find joy in something that used to seem so trivial to you.

By the end of your daily micro-moment appreciation routine, you will feel much lighter, happier, and filled with more positivity, but it doesn’t have to end there. You can continue to practice this mindfulness activity at any point during the day, and with any activity of your choice, or integrate this into your daily self-care routine. It’s a great way to remind yourself that there are so many reasons to celebrate living at home, even if the world is looking a little scary outside.
