Where to stay on Koh Chang, according to your vibe and your tribe

If the idea of Phuket or Samui sounds too mainstream for you this summer, we feel you.

And if the smaller islands seem overwhelming to you, we also feel you.

Koh Chang lies in between these peripheries: it is one of the biggest islands in Thailand, and yet one of the least spoken about. It is known mostly by those who have lived here for a while, or by those who have really studied their Lonely Planet guidebook.

Nevertheless, Koh Chang does not scream for attention. The ‘Elephant Island’ is beloved by nature-lovers for its national park and mountainous landscape, all the while still boasting all the perks of a beach escape. A little trickier to reach than several other islands, it can be accessed by ferry from Trat, and thereby makes for the perfect destination for when you have a little more time. No Songkran plans yet? Read right on.

For calm, contemporary design lovers: Awa Koh Chang

There’s something deeply calming at Awa Koh Chang’s design. Boasting beige and ecru hues throughout the property, the tranquil retreat was conceptualised to be a place of “oriental simplicity.” Featuring large balconies (perfect for sunset sessions), we love the airiness of this property, complemented by a modern philosophy and plenty of ‘grammable corners. Located by Kai Bae beach, there are 5 dining outlets to choose from too, serving as the perfect getaway for those who never want to leave the comforts of the resort at all.

For those who like a tropical mystery: The Dewa Koh Chang

A sister property to Awa, The Dewa is located around 700 metres from the former, yet is extremely distinct in its design. Blending rustic, tropical, and modern contemporary elements into one harmonious space, it’s a little more romantic here, if exoticism is your idea of romance. Surrounded by Klong Prao beach, it’s a sweet spot for walks on the white sand, and a dip in the 700sqm black tile pool. Our tip? Definitely opt for the charming two-floor villas.

A romantic boutique getaway: Nest Sense

Whilst Nest Sense is located on Lonely Beach, there is no need to feel lonely here. In fact, it’s a great place to cosy up in your ‘nest’ with a loved one. Featuring only 18 guest rooms, privacy is the name of the game at Nest Sense, as the property is comprised of 10 villas and 8 deluxe rooms. With sprawling sea views extending beyond your private infinity pool, it’s a great getaway for couples to enjoy some alone time — and even play badminton or volleyball on the designated courts here, too. Whatever your hobby.

For those who like it a little rustic: Aana Villas Koh Chang

Aana Villas has a lot of options to choose from, so pick your villa wisely. With some located atop a hill with a mountain view from the plunge pool, and others located within a main building, Aana Villas embraces a more rustic design ethos. White walls are met with wooden accents and rounded enclosures, making for a very unique stay. Definitely also opt for a boat dinner if that’s your kind of thing, and savour the authentic Trat food that is said to be very good here.

An oasis for families: Centara Koh Chang Tropicana

There are some people who head to the islands to escape from it all and enjoy some peace and quiet. Then there are people who have kids. This one is a great option for the latter group. Centara Koh Chang Tropicana is located on Koh Chang’s western coast, and is framed by palm trees to give it an oasis-like charm. Even though there is a lot for young ones to explore and be entertained by (think water park-like sliders), the resort still manages to maintain a relaxing air about it. Whether you take a Muay Thai class in the afternoon or welcome the day with a morning meditation session, the resort tends to many a need for many a family.
