Well, here we are again. Awards season is underway and the celebrities turned out in force last night for the first big event of the year: the Golden Globes 2023. While the ceremony’s star has been waning somewhat in recent years (with some in-the-know critics even predicting its death knell sooner rather than later), you wouldn’t know it from the star wattage in the room this year.
And, where the stars go the fashion brands surely follow, with the Golden Globes often acting as a barometer for the red carpet trends we’re likely to see at the BAFTAs and Oscars. Here are the jaw-dropping gowns, sleek tailoring and dazzling jewellery that topped the Golden Globes 2023 best-dressed list.
Anya Taylor-Joy
Never one to make a traditional fashion choice, Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy chose a golden yellow strapless Dior bralette and matching column skirt for the Golden Globes 2023. Finished with a tie-waist and tie-back, the look was complements by statement gold and diamond jewellery, a swept back hairstyle and a Dior Beauty makeup look.
Daisy Edgar-Jones
British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress – Television Limited Series for her role in Under The Banner Of Heaven, opted for gothic glamour in a custom voluminous black Gucci gown. The looks was completed with a bevy of cariter jewellery, including Étincelle de Cartier earrings, an Étincelle de Cartier ring and a Cartier Maillon Panthère ring.
Elizabeth Debicki
Tapping into the pink trend that proved very popular on the Golden Globes red carpet (Seth Rogan even pitched up in a salmon-coloured suit), The Crown star Elizabeth Debicki chose head-to-toe rose-hued Dior. Eschewing serious embellishment the look was finished with a diamond necklace and flowing blonde waves.
Jenna Ortega
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega made a big impact on the red carpet in a show-stopping Gucci gown. The sophisticated gown, which blended cutouts, wrap elements and pleated floor-length sleeves, proved a glamorous take on the signature style of Ortega’s most famous character – as did her eyeliner heavy makeup look.
Austin Butler
Austin Butler, who scooped the gong for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of the King of Rock’n’Roll in Elvis, choose a classic Gucci tuxedo for the 2023 Golden Globes. Satin lapels and a matching bow tie gave the look a luxe air while chunky Cartier rings, a Cartier Juste un Clou bracelet and ankle boots in lieu of loafers added edge.
Julia Garner
Julia Garner, who was nominated for two awards at the Golden Globes for her starring roles as fake heiress Anna Sorokin in Inventing Anna and as Ruth Langmore in Ozark, was another star who opted to go the Barbie route on the red carpet. Garner offset her platinum blonde pixie crop with a princess-worthy bubblegum pink Gucci gown replete with crystal embellishment and tiered ruffled hems.
Salma Hayek
The festive season may be over but apparently no-one told Salma Hayek, who arrived at the Golden Globes 2023 wearing a truly dazzling custom Gucci gown. The nude dress was given an Art Deco twist courtesy of a sunburst crystal design and chandelier-style sleeves all soften with a relaxed up-do. And to rival with such a sparkling dress? Some serious diamonds from Maison Boucheron.
Michelle Williams
Too much is never enough for Michelle Williams, who opted for a fantastically frothy Gucci confection for the Golden Globes. Nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her part in The Fabelmans, Williams paired her ruffles, crystal-trimmed gown with coordinating platforms from the brand.
Diego Calva
Rejecting traditional black in favour of an elegant deep green, Diego Calva, who was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy for Babylon, also turned to Gucci for his red carpet tailoring. Accessorised with an oversized black bow tie and floral lapel pin, expect to see this shade everywhere come wedding season.
Park Chan-Wook
South Korean director Park Chan-Wook, whose film Decision to Leave was nominated for ‘Best Picture – Non-English Language also side-stepped black in favour of a navy single-breasted tuxedo. The Gucci look was finished with classic lace-up shoes and a coordinated bow tie.
Bailey Bass
